How to stop surface rust forming on your chassis
When was the last time you checked underneath your car?
If you're like most people, you probably don't pay much attention to the rust on your chassis until it becomes a big problem. By then, it can be expensive and time-consuming to fix. In this blog post, we're going to explain how to remove surface rust and from your chassis with Lanoguard before it gets to the point where you need any rust repair work. Also, we will go through the process to rust prevention, which is simple and easy to do, but it's important that you follow the steps carefully so that you get the best results.
Step 1: Remove excess surface rust with a wire brush or jet wash
The first step to prevent rust is to clean the chassis and remove any unsound surfaces. You can do this by jetwashing your vehicle or using a wire brush and wiping the areas affected by rust. We recommend using a jetwash for best results. Simply jet washing your car will get rid of any filth and grime. Make sure to get rid of any flaking or loose pieces of paint, underseal, or rust. If necessary, a wire brush can be used to sometimes remove flaky debris. Once you've cleaned the surface, you must wait for it to dry before starting the rust treatment process. This can be slightly damp as Lanoguard will absorb moisture and water and displaces it too, but make sure the surface isn't soaking wet.
Step 2: Apply Lanoguard Moto Grease On Worsening Areas
The next step is to use Lanoguard Moto Grease on any affected area which is highly prone to rust or is already. This includes weld seams, nuts and bolts, and sharp edges.
Lanoguard Moto Grease is lanolin based and is perfect for lubrication, waterproofing, and heavy-duty rust prevention. It offers a highly concentrated coating that instantly waterproofs rust underneath a vehicle and guards against all corrosion caused by road salts, acid, and alkaline environments. Moto Grease can be used for a variety of purposes, including in industries to maintain the functionality and serviceability of machinery and vehicles. It is most frequently used in conjunction with our Moto Spray to protect vehicle underbodies and chassis from rust. Simply put, it lubricates, protects, and holds firmly in place. Once the Moto Grease is applied, you can apply the Lanoguard Moto Spray straight over the top.
Step 3: Apply Lanoguard Moto Spray To The Whole Chassis
Once you've applied the grease, you can then spray the entire underbody with Lanoguard Moto Spray. Make sure that you avoid spraying brake discs, brake pads, and in the engine bay the fan belts. A waterproof coating with lubricating quality, Lanoguard Moto Spray seals and safeguards the surface. By sealing the surface and removing all moisture and oxygen, a straightforward spray treatment will shield vehicles from all salt, acid, and alkaline damage.
Step 4: Leave Your Underbody To Dry
After being applied, Lanoguard achieves its ultimate state 7 to 10 days later. Day 0 it is “oily” day 3 “soft” and final state is dry to the touch, but you know something is there. It dries to a clear, transparent, semi-satin wet appearance that lasts for several months before becoming a little duller. You can jet wash it to restore it to its original condition. For the first 24 hours of the curing process, it is advisable to let the car sit without being driven. Once it's dry, you can then enjoy a rust-free chassis! Lanoguard doesn’t remove existing rust, but it does bond to the metal surface below – when applied it seeps below the surface rust and then gradually overtime pushes the oxidation off.
Step 5: Reapply Once A Year
Very little preparation is needed to reapply Lanoguard, and top-up applications frequently go on faster than the initial coat. You can just coat-on-coat and spray over the top of last year's coat rather than removing it. In essence, all that is required is a brief wash of the underbody the previous day, followed by drying off and spraying. The procedure is as easy as a short inspection of the underbody and second coat of our Lanoguard Moto Spray will need to be applied to the entire vehicle underbody. This will be enough to treat rust for the oncoming year and will act as a protective layer. It's up to you to decide whether another coat of Lanoguard is needed between these top ups, but the general recommended time is once a year.
