Rustproofing Your Vehicle Underbody This Spring

Is your underbody protected against rust and corrosion? Whilst the salt and grit of the Winter months can make your vehicle more susceptible, the increased moisture, mud, and damp of Spring season can be just as much an issue. Read on to find out the benefits of Lanoguard and why it is an ideal solution for easy Spring underbody and chassis rustproofing and protection.

GET READY FOR APRIL SHOWERS...

Rust is formed through the oxidation process, in which moisture and oxygen react with a ferrous metal to form iron oxide (rust). Whilst Winter salt speeds up this process, it doesn’t cause it directly, and moisture is the real enemy of vehicle underbodies.

Our Vehicle Underbody Care Kits work by providing a complete hermetic seal and barrier coating on the metal surface, which displaces moisture and oxygen – stopping the rusting process dead. This means that existing rust cannot continue, and new rust cannot form.

With April Showers and increased rainfall and moisture just around the corner, now is as good a time as any to waterproof your vehicle and protect it. With Lanoguard applied, water will just bead off, and you can still jet wash the underbody without removing the coating too!

POST-WINTER UNDERBODY INSPECTION

Spring is also of course an ideal time to check your underbody post-Winter to see how it’s doing. A quick inspection of the underbody and chassis to check for signs of developing rust and corrosion is never a bad idea. Some key areas to inspect include weld seams, nuts and bolts, shock absorbers, leaf springs, and any particularly exposed parts. Dissimilar metal corrosion can also be a common problem too, so checking any areas where steel and aluminium meet is also important.

If you do find signs of rust, Lanoguard will arrest the rust and stop it dead immediately. And it’s best of course to protect and prevent before the rust starts to creep in too! All that’s required before a Lanoguard application is to remove any flaking or loose bits of rust, and to give the underbody a clean, a close-up jet wash is best if you can. There’s no need to mask up, and don’t be concerned about completely removing all signs of salt or grit, as mentioned the hermetic seal and displacement of moisture means that salt is harmless, and Lanoguard can in fact push any salt crystals away from the surface over time too. Find out all about how to apply Lanoguard on our How To Apply page here.

DAMP, RAINY, MUDDY WEATHER? NO PROBLEM FOR LANOGUARD…

A huge benefit to Lanoguard, as well as being super easy to apply, is that it is absolutely fine for damp and cold weather treatment and protection. Most conventional rustproofing products do not hermetically seal the surface, and this means that moisture can get trapped under the coating and the oxidation process can continue underneath. With increased mud this Spring season, even on dry days moisture can also become trapped against the surface under dirt and grime. It’s best to have the surface sealed to keep moisture at bay.

Lanoguard will drive out and displace moisture, as it chemically bonds with the metal surface. Think of it as a magnet – it polar bonds with the metal and pushes the moisture away from it. Due to this, you can apply Lanoguard on a slightly damp surface too. So if it’s been raining or is cold, and you can’t get your underbody completely dry, don’t worry! It’s best not to apply Lanoguard on a dripping wet surface but be assured Lanoguard won’t trap moisture and will protect and nourish the surface. TOP TIPS FOR LANOGUARD SPRING TREATMENT

  • If you get a nice spell of Spring sunshine, keep the bottle of spray and the pot of grease out in the sun before treatment as this will thin it down nicely prior to application
  • Keep your protected vehicle out in the cool spring air after application, as air-flow will help the curing process
  • Spring is a fantastic time to get out your Garden tools and equipment, and Lanoguard is also ideal for protecting these… Why not give your lawn mower, gates and outdoor electrical components a spray with Lanoguard to waterproof and protect them?
