Preserving & Protecting a 1986 Porsche 944 Lux from Rust & Corrosion
In this episode of Driveway Icons, we dive into the world of Porsche heritage with a car that blends 80s engineering, timeless design, and a serious legacy — the 1986 Porsche 944 Lux, first registered in May of that year.
Joining us for this walkaround is Andy Gregory, proud owner of the 944 and founder of the Stuttgaart Porsche Club and the podcast My Dad’s Car. Andy brings not only deep enthusiasm but also a unique perspective on classic Porsche ownership, community, and storytelling. You can explore more of his Porsche passion at My Dad’s Car Podcast.
Hosting this episode is Simon Chester, a seasoned modern and classic sports car specialist, who brings his expert eye to the car’s mechanics, design, and condition. Together, they take a full look around the car — inside, outside, and underneath — to appreciate what makes the 944 so iconic and how it fits into Porsche’s evolution.
We revisit the performance-driven ethos of the 80s, talk about the understated brilliance of the 944 platform, and — crucially — apply Lanoguard Underbody Protection to help ensure this classic keeps running (and looking) its best for years to come.
Whether you’re a Porsche enthusiast, a fan of 80s sports cars, or just love hearing the stories behind iconic vehicles, this episode offers a great mix of passion, knowledge, and preservation.

Hi guys, and welcome to Lanagard's latest driveway icons.
0:03
We've got a beautiful 944 Lux today and he's brought it in for us to have a look at, get it up in the air and give it some Lanagard treatment.
0:10
Good to see you, Andy.
0:11
Nice to meet you.
0:12
Thanks for having us.
0:24
So Andy, we're inside your, your 944 Lux Indeed.
0:27
Yeah, which is very luxurious, actually.
0:29
It's quite comfy.
0:30
Yeah, yeah.
0:31
Tell us a few bits about, you know, why you've got this car, what it means to you.
0:35
So yeah, it came about.
0:36
I've had it probably 9 years.
0:37
I had a little bit of inheritance previously.
0:41
You kind of you spend stuff on the House or the family, etcetera.
0:43
And I was like, no, I'm going to spend a little bit of something sensible, something on me.
0:46
I didn't spend a huge amount of money on it, but yeah, I bought this for me.
0:49
I used to walk past kind of 94 fours in the street as a kid, go to school, and I just really like the style of them.
0:56
I was never kind of a Porsche poster child.
0:58
Like I didn't have the 9/11 on the wall.
1:00
I had Ferraris on the wall, but I can't afford an F40, so it's just sort of second fiddle.
1:04
But yeah, I bought this and I set out to buy a mint kind of S2.
1:09
Really.
1:09
I wanted sort of investment Porsche.
1:11
What I ended up with was kind of a modified messed about with 944, but for half the money.
1:16
So yeah, this came up.
1:18
I bought it locally.
1:20
It's done loads of miles.
1:21
It's probably got knocking on 200,000 miles.
1:23
It's got patina, but not in a bad way.
1:26
No, no, no.
1:27
It's so the the colour's pretty striking.
1:29
It's a Mitsubishi colour.
1:30
It's not a silver colour.
1:31
It's not, it's not, it's not a factory colour.
1:34
So yeah, it was silver from the factory.
1:36
Someone at some point has repainted it.
1:37
Not brilliantly, but it looks kind of it looks kind of cool.
1:40
That's the job, yeah, yeah.
1:42
Inside, it's been messed around with.
1:43
So I've got this steering wheel, this I bought, I used to work at Halfords years ago and I bought this in the reduced sale section for about 25 lbs.
1:51
It's been in almost all of my cars.
1:53
So yeah.
1:53
Momo competition steering wheel.
1:55
Yeah.
1:55
The hedge unit is yeah.
1:57
Pioneer.
1:57
This was top of the range again when I was working in Halfords, there were sort of three, £400.
2:02
I'd love to put some more audio in it, but then actually it's beautiful.
2:06
It makes a nice noise.
2:07
It's got yeah dank's stainless steel exhaust on it, so yeah, it does make a nice noise.
2:12
Nice.
2:13
Especially when you kind of get up in the Rev range.
2:15
I'm talking of that.
2:16
How about we hop out, we'll have a look under the engine Bay.
2:19
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we can flip the bonnet.
2:20
Yeah, see what's see what's underneath.
2:22
Cool.
2:28
So Andy, we're we're under the hood with this nice 2 1/2 litre for pop Yeah yeah.
2:34
Been reliable for you Yeah not too bad to be fair yeah, I had a water hose split on me but aside from that generally speaking yeah mechanically it's been pretty good actually.
2:44
A valve when I change one of these, we can start for a while and yeah, I had to change one of those.
2:52
So I'm just looking at, you know, generally it's pretty good.
2:55
And we can see you've had a respray on it showing it's ageing areas.
2:59
I was just saying so the the servo here is, is a little bit corroded.
3:04
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
3:04
But we can give that a Little Miss with Lana guards because it will stop that getting any worse.
3:09
It also just sort of will bring it up a little bit long term as well.
3:14
So hopefully save you any bills in that area just from stopping the corrosion.
3:18
But I mean, they're built to last on these things.
3:22
Yeah, definitely.
3:22
And obviously the mileage on it, we're not quite sure what it is.
3:25
It's, no, it's a high mileage thing.
3:27
It's not.
3:27
And it's not original by any means.
3:29
As you can see, it's silver under here.
3:30
It's very much blue on the outside.
3:32
So yeah, it's been messed around with.
3:33
I'm not kind of precious about it from an originality point of view, but yeah, it kind of motors along pretty well.
3:40
That's the job.
3:41
Yeah.
3:41
Put smiles on your face.
3:49
So Andy, we've got some great 80s arches here.
3:52
Yeah, I love the box arches on these.
3:54
You see a bit like the 924, but yeah, wider.
3:57
Yep, I've got cut one wheels, the 17 inch cut ones that you can see on the 9/6 fours door handles.
4:03
So this one's got the four script handles, but they've been polished up now.
4:06
They're cool.
4:07
968 cut mirrors or 964 cut mirrors.
4:11
So again, later mirrors on there, stainless exhaust, turbo rear spoiler there underneath, few, few add-ons then.
4:18
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's, yeah, it's not original.
4:21
I quite like it for that.
4:22
So moving down towards the front, Yeah, Yeah.
4:25
So we've seen your pop up headlights.
4:27
Yeah, pop up headlights.
4:28
So yeah, very 80s design, which will never be uncool, I don't think.
4:31
OK, well, let's get her up in the air, see what it's like underneath.
4:35
Cool.
4:35
Let's go.
4:54
So a slight change of plan.
4:55
We're now outside on a different ramp because due to the slimness of the 944's design, it wouldn't quite fit on the one in the warehouse.
5:01
So do bear it with us.
5:03
The noise is a little bit noisy, so we'll do our best to, to talk over that.
5:10
So looking underneath the car, we've got a couple of areas which they, they do, they're all prone to go in.
5:15
I can see it's had some repair work done in the past, which is, you know, half of the course for anything of this 4 year old this vintage.
5:22
So you've got a nice gearbox at the back with this.
5:23
Yeah.
5:24
So you've done your drive shafts, you've been replaced.
5:26
So you're obviously keeping it up to date and doing it as a yeah, I'll do what I can myself.
5:30
And if not, then yeah, I'll get kind of a specialist garage to do that tends tends to be the engine stuff.
5:34
I'll get someone else to do.
5:35
Yeah.
5:36
And then like Dr belts and things and then yeah, that sort of stuff.
5:39
Bolt on, bolt off.
5:39
I'll give it a go myself.
5:41
It's a good way to know your car, isn't it?
5:43
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
5:44
Definitely the highs and lows of living with a classic.
5:47
Yeah.
5:48
So moving along, Stanks exhaust, Yeah.
5:50
Stanis exhaust.
5:51
So, yeah, you heard it earlier.
5:52
Sounds really nice.
5:53
Yeah.
5:54
Yeah.
5:54
Should live forever, hopefully.
5:57
So we can see a few repair, repair spots, which, you know, these are prone to go over sills.
6:08
So Andy, while we're under your car, Yeah.
6:10
You do a little bit in life to do with cars.
6:14
Yeah.
6:14
So I wear a number of hats.
6:16
Yeah, work wise, I'm a marketing manager for a parts supplier, car parts supplier.
6:21
In my spare time I've got a podcast that I run, so it's called my Dad's Car.
6:26
It's all about kind of nostalgia, basically remembering the vehicles from when we grew up.
6:30
And then I also organise a Porsche group called Stuttgart South.
6:34
So it's Porsche owners along the South Coast will get together.
6:37
We'll go for a bit of a drive for the meet up, our pub and breakfast.
6:40
So Andy, we're going to start putting the lender card on now.
6:43
Yeah, yeah, we had a little chat and a look over the car.
6:46
So basically it's a case of point and squirt and try and keep you up to mix this up or is it a pre mix?
6:52
So you just got to put the yeah, put the gun in and then adjust the nozzle so you get a good, good squirt.
6:59
Probably is with the wind as well.
7:00
You're you're fighting them.
7:01
Well, this is a joy of doing it outside.
7:03
I guess it's a real life DIY application.
7:05
Yeah.
7:06
So it's worth getting right in on the inside of the sills there because a good shout.
7:10
Yeah, going to be where your main issues lay.
7:15
And how long will this last?
7:17
Well, do a Goodyear.
7:18
Depends how you use it.
7:19
I mean, if it's on a Land Rover that's in the fields, Yeah.
7:22
Yeah, I would say definitely every year.
7:25
If you're doing car shows in summer, you're probably going to get a year or two out of out of a property.
7:30
Yeah.
7:30
And do you need to remove it or is it just a no, no, just recount.
7:33
OK, Go over the top of it again.
7:34
So, so as you can see, it's, it's really technical to put it on.
7:44
Do you want to have a cry?
7:45
Yeah.
7:45
Yeah, go for it.
7:45
Yeah.
7:46
So literally point and square so you can see the areas where it's been on.
7:50
Yeah.
7:50
Yeah.
7:51
Like that.
7:52
Yeah.
7:52
Pretty much easy, isn't it?
7:53
Yeah.
7:54
So if you come back and move the gun as it's going on, OK, you'll get a lot better coverage and more use out of the product.
8:03
So if it starts dripping, you've got you've got too much on.
8:07
So, Andy, that's the Lanagard treatment done.
8:09
Doesn't take long, but thanks to you for bringing the The 944 down to us today.
8:15
