Show Car at the Weekend, Back Roads on the Way Home: Alex’s GT86

Some cars are kept spotless for shows. Others are built to be driven.

Alex’s GT86 does both.

As Lanoguard’s Community Manager, Alex is around interesting cars every day, but his blue and white wrapped Toyota GT86 is his own pride and joy. It gets taken to shows, gets plenty of attention and, when there’s a good stretch of road ahead, gets driven exactly as a GT86 should.

And that means looking after more than what you can see.

Built to Be Driven

Lightweight, rear-wheel drive and at its best on a decent back road, the GT86 isn't really a car that encourages you to take it easy.

But regular driving on British roads means the underside is constantly exposed to water, mud and road grime. Add road salt during the colder months and there’s plenty going on beneath the car that you might not notice from above.

That doesn't mean driving it less. It just means preventative maintenance becomes part of owning and enjoying it.

Giving the Underside Some Attention

While the wrap, wheels and bodywork get the attention at shows, Alex wanted to make sure the less visible parts of his GT86 were being looked after too.

After getting underneath the car and giving it a clean, it was ready for Lanoguard.

Preparation doesn't need to mean stripping everything back until it looks new. Loose dirt and flaky rust should be removed, but Lanoguard can be applied over stable surface rust to help prevent further corrosion.

Moto Spray can then be applied across the underside, creeping into seams and around components before creating a flexible barrier against moisture, salt and road grime.

For more vulnerable areas such as nuts, bolts, weld seams and exposed edges, Moto Grease provides some extra protection.

It’s about being able to take it to a show one weekend, head out onto the back roads the next and continue enjoying the car without forgetting about what’s happening underneath. After all, there’s not much point owning a GT86 if you’re not going to drive it.
