Post-Winter Vehicle Checklist

A Quick Check Now Could Prevent Costly Repairs Later

Winter in the UK doesn’t go quietly.

Months of rain, grit, freezing temperatures and road salt all take their toll — especially underneath your vehicle, where you can’t easily see it.

Even when everything looks fine, salt and moisture can linger long after the worst of the weather has passed. And that’s where problems begin.

Spring is the ideal time to inspect your vehicle it could help protect its structure and avoid unnecessary repair costs.

We’ve created a simple, printable checklist to help you carry out a thorough inspection.

Why a Post-Winter Check Matters

Road salt is highly corrosive. Combined with damp conditions, it speeds up rust — particularly on exposed metal parts and hidden seams.

A quick post-winter check in spring can help you:

  • Catch early rust before it spreads
  • Identify wear caused by harsh winter roads
  • Protect structural areas before corrosion takes hold
  • Prepare your vehicle for the season ahead

Prevention now is always easier — and cheaper — than repair later.

Key Areas to Check After Winter

While our full downloadable checklist goes into detail, here’s a brief overview of the most important areas:

  • Underneath & Chassis - The underbody is most exposed to salt and spray. Check for heavy rust, flaking metal or bubbling paint on structural areas, suspension components, brake and fuel lines, and around tow bars.
  • Wheel Arches & Edges - Mud and salt collect here. Look for rough patches or early signs of corrosion.
  • Exhaust & Mountings - Heat and moisture make exhaust systems vulnerable to rust. Check for thinning metal or loose fittings.
  • Tyres & Brakes - Potholes and winter driving can affect wear. Look for tyre damage and listen for changes in braking feel.
  • Battery & Electrics - Cold weather strains batteries. Check terminals for corrosion and ensure all lights are working properly.

If anything looks concerning, it’s always best to have a professional inspect it.

Reset for the Season Ahead

Spring is when you put things right.

If you spot vulnerable areas, now’s the time to top up or apply protection and stop rust before it takes hold — especially before more typical British spring rain sets in.

Don’t wait for small issues to become expensive ones.
