Winterising a Classic Land Rover: Keeping a 1977 Series 3 Working

Use it. Get it muddy. Pick up the Christmas tree. Just don't forget to look after what's underneath.

Some classic vehicles spend their lives polished, covered and brought out when the weather is just right.

Dyno's 1977 Series 3 Land Rover isn't one of them.

It's a proper family workhorse. Dyno learnt to drive it around the fields, and nearly 50 years later it's still being put to work including the annual job of collecting the Christmas tree.

But keeping an old Land Rover working for that long also teaches you a few things about corrosion.

What was hiding underneath

Dyno's Series 3 has been restored, and during that process the family discovered a problem familiar to plenty of classic 4x4 owners.

Old underseal had concealed what was happening beneath it.

While the outside could appear protected, corrosion had been developing out of sight. By the time the true condition became apparent, considerably more work was required.

It's an important lesson for anyone looking after an older 4x4: protection matters, but so does being able to inspect what you're protecting.

Why winter matters to a working Land Rover

Land Rovers like Dyno's were built to get dirty.

Mud, wet fields and rough tracks are part of their appeal. But material left packed into areas underneath can retain moisture, and winter adds road salt into the equation.

An older vehicle also has decades of seams, joints, cavities and exposed areas to keep an eye on.

That's why getting underneath before winter is worthwhile.

Start with a proper clean. Remove accumulated mud and dirt, allow everything to dry and use the opportunity to inspect the chassis and surrounding components.

If something needs repairing, deal with it. If stable surface rust is present, Lanoguard can also be applied over it to help keep moisture out and prevent corrosion progressing further.
