Preserving & Protecting a 1967 Mk 2 Jaguar from Rust & Corrosion
Welcome to another episode of Driveway Icons, our series celebrating legendary cars, their passionate owners, and the simple steps they take to protect their pride and joy from rust and corrosion.
In this episode, we meet Andrew Thomson, a true veteran of the automotive world. With over 60 years of experience in the industry and a history of restoring classic MGs, Andrew brings a wealth of knowledge—and a deep love for British motoring—to the driveway.
For the past decade, Andrew has been the proud owner of a 1967 Mk 2 Jaguar, a car he’s lovingly improved and maintained over the years. Together with the founder of Lanoguard, they explore this British icon inside and out, share stories from the golden age of engineering, and apply Lanoguard Underbody Protection to ensure this timeless machine remains rust-free for many more miles to come.
The Mk 2 Jaguar: A British Motoring Icon

Presenter:
Hi everybody, and welcome to another episode of Driveway Icons!
Today, we’re with this wonderful 1967 Mark 2 Jag, and I’m joined by the owner, Andy.
Andy:
Thank you very much.
Presenter:
We’re going to hop inside and chat about the car, what it means to Andy, and why he chose to own such a beautiful machine.

Presenter:
Alright, here we are inside your gorgeous Mark 2 Jaguar.
Andy:
Thanks!
Presenter:
Tell me, why did you buy it?
Andy:
Well, when my wife Janet and I were 21, we had a green Daimler Jag. We did a lot of our courting in that car, so it always held a special place for us.
As time went on, we got married and had kids—and couldn’t afford to keep the car. But then, about 15 years ago at the Goodwood Revival, I spotted this one. Once I negotiated the price, I rang Janet and said, “I’ve got our courting car back!”
Presenter:
So it was a Daimler V8 back then, right?
Andy:
Yeah, it wasn’t quite as exciting as the Jaguar, but it was still special.
[1:36]
Presenter:
One of the things I love about these cars is the craftsmanship—walnut dash, aircraft-style toggle switches...
Andy:
Yeah, all those flick switches! Here’s one for the fan—it says “Fast / Slow”—and even a button labeled “Cigar”!
Presenter:
And look at the glove box key—turn it and it pops open like a picnic table!
Andy:
Yep, got some classic stuff in there—Woodbine cigarettes, matches, even a racing steering wheel.
Presenter:
That steering wheel is a beauty—lightweight aluminium and riveted wood. Perfect for handling that big engine under the bonnet.
[3:31]
Presenter:
Here we are under the bonnet of the 1967 Mark 2 Jag. 3.4-litre engine, right?
Andy:
That's right.
Presenter:
It looks tidy! Twin carbs, straight-through exhaust... I’m surprised to see it’s a twin-cam.
Andy:
Yeah, it's a reliable engine—goes back decades. The straight exhaust makes it sound great too.
Presenter:
Definitely feels like something you could work on yourself, proper old-school.
Andy:
Exactly.
[4:55]
Presenter:
What’s with those scratches on the inside of the windscreen?
Andy:
Ah, classic story—back in the day, the heaters weren’t great. In winter, the windows would mist up, and before the husband could say anything, the wife would wipe it down—with a diamond ring. That’s what caused the scratches!
[6:00]
Presenter:
Let’s give this lovely engine a fire-up, shall we?
Andy:
Absolutely.
[6:28]
Presenter:
Alright, now we’re going to walk around the outside. Andy, show us some of the highlights.
Andy:
You’ve got rear quarter lights here—great for fresh air in the back. Little red indicator repeaters so the driver can check if the lights are working. Manual mirrors, manual air vents, and check this out—see this chrome trim? One solid piece, with the door handle perfectly aligned. A clever bit of design.
Presenter:
Beautiful lines. Let’s get her up on the ramps and have a look underneath.
[7:54]
Presenter:
She’s up in the air—what do you think?
Andy:
Fascinating! I can see all the work that’s been done—paint treatments, new parts, split pins, upgraded brakes, and heavy-duty springs. She’s got adjustable shocks, nylon bushes—handles corners brilliantly.
Presenter:
I love the straight-through pipes—none of that winding exhaust routing. Makes for better performance.
Andy:
And it's got OverDrive—four gears plus the flick-switch OD.
Presenter:
This thing’s had a lot of love over 15 years!
Andy:
Every winter, we do a new project. It’s a labour of love.
[10:06]
Andy:
Of course, a few oil leaks are welcome—they coat the underside and help preserve it.
Presenter:
Like old Land Rovers!
Andy:
Exactly. And credit to Gentry Coachworks—they’ve kept this car in top shape. Last time they even applied some Lanoguard protection without me asking.
[11:10]
Presenter:
So, 1967—what was going on then?
Andy:
I was 15. England had just won the World Cup in ‘66, so it was a big time. These Jags were popular with bank managers and professionals.
Presenter:
And the music?
Andy:
The Beatles, The Stones, The Who. We even towed a retro caravan with this to festivals, dressed up in 60s gear!
[12:27]
Presenter:
Other cars you’ve had?
Andy:
Started with Lambrettas—still have them! First car was a minivan with windows. Took it to the Isle of Wight Pop Festival in 1970.
[13:20]
Presenter:
Time for some Lanoguard. Glasses on so I can see and spray properly!
This Jag's in good nick, but we’ll give it a nice coat—especially those brake lines and underbody electrics. Super easy to apply.
Andy:
We’ve already done the rear a bit—it’s holding up well.
Presenter:
15 years of Lanoguard! Wonder how many cars you’ve done in that time? Drop a guess in the comments!
[16:00]
Presenter:
